Lorna Gardner Hower passed away peacefully in her sleep on the morning of March 29, 2019, at The Landing at Willow Grove. She was 85. She was married for 57 years to David Hower, who preceded her in death in 2017. She is survived by her sister, Marilyn Gardner; her son, Mark; her daughters, Anne and Kay; two granddaughters, Kelley and Sandy; two nephews, Scott Gardner and Alan Gardner; and her niece, Wendy Gardner Beistline. She was also preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Major Alan Gardner, and his wife, Judy; and her daughter-in-law, Susan. As her mother was one of ten children ranging 32 years apart, she also has innumerable cousins, many of whom she was able to stay connected with throughout her life.

Lorna was born Oct. 23, 1933, in Lewisburg, Pa., to Mary Gardner and Robert Gardner, a professor at Bucknell University. She graduated from Bucknell with an AB in Political Science and worked for the Girl Scout Council of Philadelphia as a camp director. As a young woman, she read about Milford Sound and it was a highlight of her life to see it when the family traveled to New Zealand. Lorna and her family traveled all over the world, seeing numerous countries in Asia and Europe in addition to living in Sydney, Australia from 1976-1979. She and her husband returned to Australia many times to visit friends and spent much of their retired years travelling all over the US and Europe.

Throughout her lifetime, she was active with the women’s organization at the Abington Presbyterian Church, the Hatboro Rotary, Chamber of Commerce, and YMCA, and her neighbors on Lookout Lane in Willow Grove, where the family lived for 53 years. She was a Girl Scout and Brownie Leader with her daughters, a regular member of The Circle bible study group at Abington Presbyterian, and a book group participant with women in her neighborhood. She was a prolific letter writer and loved to read, cook, and shop. She was also a veritable “cat lady” and rescued numerous stray cats.

A celebration of life service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 13, at Abington Presbyterian Church, York and Susquehanna Roads, Abington, Pa., with a reception at the church to follow. She will be interred next to her husband and parents at 1 p.m. the following day in the Lewisburg Cemetery in Lewisburg, Pa. Please wear bright colors to the service.
