ALICE AND BENJAMIN COOL by Gordon Anderson (Grandson)

The SE 34-48-5-W5 was homesteaded in 1915 by Benjamin Cool. He and his wife, Alice came from the American midwest and were of Scots, English and German (Pennsylvania Dutch) origin. Their life in this district was marked by the usual pioneers' lot of hard work, poverty of material possessions and hardships, but was also enriched by many happy times, lasting friendships and helpful neighbors. They suffered the tragedy of the drowning of their only son, David in 1920 when the Modeste (Poplar) Creek was in flood. His cap and tracks were found near the creek but his body was never recovered and this lack of finality was always a concern to his family. There were also four daughters: Beulah who remained in the States; Michel who died in infancy; Mary who married Albert Gillespie and Mildred who married Victor Anderson.

Ben Cool died at Edmonton in 1945 at the age of 86. Alice lived on quietly and peacefully for many more years; she died at Boone, Iowa in 1964 at the age of 95 years, 362 days.

Alice will be remembered by those who knew her for her goodness, sincere kindness and strength in adversity. She was a successful gardener and homemaker and took full advantage of the wild berries and other bounty of the country. Ben was a strong, independent man and was said by some to be as stubborn as the mules he drove. Perhaps tenacious would be a more polite word to use. But, who ever heard of a tenacious homesteader?

-- The Berrymore/Carnwood Historical Society, Forests to Grainfields (1977), p. 175.
