Hazel Virginia Wood McDonald died Saturday, April 6, 2019 in the Memory Care wing of Piedmont Crossing in Thomasville, North Carolina after a fairly lengthy dementia decline. Hazel was born to Kathleen Moss Wood and Harvey Reed Wood December 3, 1925 in High Point. She grew up in the same town where she said in high school, she enjoyed playing the viola in the high school band. In her twenties she worked at Heritage Furniture and spent many carefree weekends with her friends at Carolina Beach. She met the love of her life Robert L. McDonald on a blind date at a Christmas party. They were married in 1958 and spent 28 blissful years together in Atlanta. Hazel often accompanied Bob on business trips to Jacksonville, Florida. They also spent many happy times in Santa Maria, Florida at his aunt's cottage. During this time Hazel worked in various book keeping positions, developed a love of antiques and Waterford Crystal, which she ordered directly from Ireland, and created many needlework handicrafts. She also loved finding a good bargain at various flea markets to decorate their home. Hazel moved to Piedmont Crossing in 1998 several years after Bob's death, where she enjoyed a period of time of independent living with her new-found friends. Hazel is predeceased by her parents, her husband, and her brother Bill Wood. She is survived by her niece Amy Wood Pasquini and her husband John, and her sister-in-law Margaret Wood, all of whom were caregivers during the last decade of Hazel's life. There will be a grave side Memorial Service at Guilford Memorial Park, Wednesday, April 17, 2019 at 11:00 AM. She will remain at J. C. Green & Sons Funeral Home in Thomasville, NC until the hour of the service. In lieu of flowers or monetary contributions to a charity, you are invited to volunteer to visit residents at Memory Care units wherever you live. They are an underserved population and need your love. Online condolences may be sent to the McDonald family at www.jcgreenandsons.com.
