Obituary.

George W. Slater born July 14, 1832. Died Oct. 10, 1899, aged 67 years, 2 months and 26 days.

The subject of our sketch was born in Lawrence county, Illinois, where he resided with his parents until about thirteen years of age, when family removed to Montgomery county, Ill., where both parents died in a short time thus throwing him on his own resources at an early age. Where unaided by the help and benefit of schools, by his own industry and perseverance he acquired a good business and general education. Was united in marriage to Sarah Matthews in August 1852. Came to Kansas in July 1883, settled in Elk county on a farm where he resided until the year 1891 when he removed with his family to Severy, Kansas.

About six years ago he suffered a stroke of paralysis from which he gradually grew worse suffering continually until exhausted nature gave way.

In 1866 he united with the Christian church at Litchfield, Ill., and continued a member of that church until coming to Kansas when he united with the Congregational church of Severy from which place he was buried, the funeral services being conducted by Rev. Bixby.

A kind and loving husband and father, he leaves a wife, three sons and one daughter, to mourn his loss. Remains interred in Twin Groves cemetery.
