John Keller Griffith, Jr., M.D., age 88, a man of great conviction and integrity, passed away on Thursday, June 7, 2007 in Lake Charles, Louisiana at a local hospital. A native of Slidell, Louisiana, he was the son of U.S. Congressman John K. Griffith, Sr., M.D. and Vivian Comfort Griffith.

Dr. Griffith was a graduate of Slidell High School, LSU and Tulane School of Medicine. He completed his medical training at Charity Hospital in New Orleans, Louisiana and served as Captain in the U.S. Army during World War II at Army Navy General Hospital in Hot Springs, Arkansas.

Dr. Griffith was an Eagle Scout, a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity, and President of his medical school class. He was board certified in Internal Medicine and was a Fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians. He served as President of the Calcasieu Parish Medical Society, as an active member of the Louisiana State Medical Society, also Chief of Staff and Chief of Internal Medicine at both St. Patrick and Lake Charles Memorial Hospitals. He was an active member of the Sons of the American Revolution and Sons of the Confederacy. He founded the Louisiana Physician Guild. He practiced Internal Medicine in Lake Charles from 1949 until his retirement.

Dr. Griffith was predeceased by his wife of 60 years, Elizabeth Theriot Griffith, sister, Carolyn Griffith Groves and his son, John Keller Griffith III.

Dr. Griffith was survived by his children, daughters: Beth Griffith Drozdick and husband, Ron of Eagle River, Alaska, Dr. Frances Griffith Hartley and husband, Dr. Larry Hartley of Greenville, South Carolina; son, S. Craig Griffith and wife, Kathy of Lake Charles, LA; grandchildren: Keller and David Drozdick, Sarah Frances, Ashton and John Hartley, Matthew and Katherine Griffith; great-grandchildren: Hayley and Aidan Drozkick; and many loved nieces and nephews.

The family expresses their great appreciation to his remarkable physicians: Drs. Ben Thompson, Richard Gilmore and Eric Wolf, and his loving caregivers: Andrea, Bea, Pat, Rita and Sondria.

Dr. Griffith's funeral service was held on Tuesday, June 12, 2007 at the Johnson Funeral Home Chapel in Lake Charles, Louisiana. Monsignor Harry Greig officiated. Inurnment was followed at the Consolata Cemetery. Visitation was on Monday, June 11, 2007 and continued on Tuesday until the time of service in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations were made to the Elizabeth T. and John Keller Griffith Scholarship Fund at McNeese State University.
