Arthur Bell (November 6, 1939 – June 2, 1984)
Arthur Bell, a columnist for The Village Voice and a homosexual rights activist, died at St. Vincent's hospital of complications arising from diabetes. He was 44 years old.

Mr. Bell wrote two books, ''Dancing the Gay Lib Blues,'' published in 1971, and ''Kings Don't Mean a Thing,'' published in 1978. He wrote a column about New York City night life and show business, ''Bell Tells,'' for The Village Voice since 1976.

In 1969, Mr. Bell was one of 12 founding members of the Gay Activists' Alliance, a homosexual rights group based in New York. Also in 1969 he wrote his first article for the Village Voice, covering the ''Stonewall Riot,'' a confrontation between the police and patrons at a homosexual bar, the Stonewall Inn at 53 Christopher Street in Greenwich Village. He became a staff writer in 1976.

He is survived by his father, Samuel Bell, of Montreal; his sister, Doreen Resnick, of Toronto, and a brother, Donald Bell of Sutton, Que.
