Comp Everhart, 76, Buried Here Sunday

Comp Everhart, 76, a retired plasterer and longtime resident of Van Buren, died at 4:45 p.m. Friday, May 13, 1977 in the Lucy Lee Hospital at Poplar Bluff. He had been ill two years.

Mr. Everhart, formerly of Poplar Bluff, was born in May, 1900 in Shannon County. He spent his childhood at Poplar Bluff. On Dec. 5, 1924, he married Katie Jorden at Van Buren.

He is survived by his widow; three sons, Charles Everhart of Van Buren, Robert Everhart of St. Louis and Vernon Everhart of Topeka, Kan.; two daughters, Mrs. Mary Putnam of Davenport, Iowa and Mrs. Patricia Womack of DeSoto; one brother, Kenneth Everhart of Beaumont, Calif.; one sister, Mrs. Cleo Durocher of Carmichael, Calif.; 17 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

The funeral was held at 2 p.m. Sunday in the South Van Buren General Baptist Church. Rev. James Cook and Rev. Bob Bradford officiated. Burial was in the Van Buren Cemetery with McSpadden Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Residents of Van Buren have the privilege of viewing some of Comp's accomplishments every time they travel along Main Street. Some of the buildings he stuccoed are Van Buren High School, Hawthorne Motel, the Smalley buildings where the Carter County Family Services office is located, Smalley's package store building, Grassham's garage, the Big Spring Restaurant, Bunyard's Dry Goods Store building, Riverways discount building, the Masonic Lodge building, and many others including churches and homes. For every one of these buildings here, there is another he has worked on in area towns in Southeast Missouri at Poplar Bluff, Ellsinore, Doniphan, Ellington, Winona and Mtn. View.
