Josephine "Jo" Russell was previously married to 1st Lt. Alexander "Sandy" Bonnyman, Jr., killed in action at the battle of Tarawa, Nov. 22, 1943, and posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor. Bonnyman's remains were recovered from Tarawa in May 2015 and re-interred at his family's plot at Berry Highland Memorial Cemetery, Knoxville, Tenn.

Jo was born near San Antonio, where she met and married Bonnyman.

She was married to James Hobart Russell from 1944 to 1964. She had three daughters, Frances Bonnyman Evans, Alexandra Bonnyman Prejean and Josephine "Tina" McAllister (deceased).
