John H. Akers was the son of William Thomas Akers and his first wife Laura Beecher Nichols. He was probably named for his father's older half-brother, Pvt. John H. Akers, who died at the Battle of Second Manassas in 1862. John married Belle Harrelson about 1890, and the couple had one child, a girl named Launee born in 1896.

John and his family lived in Atlanta, where he was a traveling representative for the Platt Lumber Company, of Austell, GA. Unfortunately John died when he had a sore throat and accidentally took too much opiate to relieve the pain. His obituary stated that he was well known in Atlanta, and besides his wife, daughter, and one brother, left many friends there.
