Lola Audriene Swan, of Mt. Pleasant passed away at her residence on Tuesday, April 23, 2019 at the age of 87.
The Funeral Service for Mrs. Swan will be held at 1:00 PM on Monday, April 29 at the First United Methodist Church, 309 N. Main St., Mt. Pleasant. The Reverend Deborah J. Stowers, Senior Pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in the Forest Home Cemetery, Mt. Pleasant. Friends may call from 2-8 PM on Sunday, April 28 at the KImzey Funeral Home, 213 N. Main St., Mt. Pleasant. The family will be present to receive friends from 4-6 PM Sunday afternoon.
Lola was born on April 27, 1931 in rural Mt. Pleasant in the White Oak community to James Harlan Messer and Alice Roach Messer. She was 2nd of eight children. She attended country schools White Oak and Trenton graduating from Mt. Pleasant Community High School in 1949. She worked in Burlington for the Vogelsang Insurance Agency and was secretary to the Plant Manager at General Electric when they opened their plant in Burlington. She was a legal secretary for the Elgar Law Office from 1963-1974. She then ran for office and became the Henry County Recorder for 24 years retiring in 1998.
Lola was an avid golfer and very active in the community. She was a member of TTT, West Side Mother’s Club, Henry County Republican Women, Henry County Barrettes and Mentor Club. She also loved participating in the Mount Pleasant Community Theatre and was one of the founding members in 1969, serving as its treasurer for all of MPCT existence. She was a member of First United Methodist Church and served on various committees and enjoyed serving as a shepherd in the church shepherding program. She also served on various local and state committees for county government.
On October 5, 1952, Lola married Lyle Swan at Trenton Methodist Church. They celebrated their 66th anniversary in 2018. Lyle preceded her in death on March 14, 2019 (just shy of 6 weeks). She is preceded in death by siblings Elizabeth Smith, Wanda Bair and Delmar Messer.
Survivors include: Son Dennis Vernon (Kim) of Midway, KY and daughter Deanna Sue (Stephen Joseph) of Framingham, MA. Also surviving are 4 grandchildren: Laura Schlegel (Hans) of Nashville, TN, Travis Swan (Darby) of Spring Hill, KS, Kelsey Swan of Dallas, TX and Jacob Swan (Anastasiya) of Lexington, KY. She is also survived by 3 great grandchildren: Annika and Stein Schlegel and Vladimir Swan. Lola is survived by four of her siblings: Donald Messer of Mt. Pleasant, Marilyn Rheinschmidt of Burlington, Marvin Messer (Sandy) of Burlington and James Messer (Romajean) of Mt. Pleasant as well as many nieces and nephews
