Matthew was the son of Joseph Embree Farrington (1740-1833) and Martha Hodskins (1747-1836), born 10 Aug 1770 in Frederickstown, Dutchess County, NY. He married Alice White bef. 1795, daughter of John and Tabitha White [will of Tabitha White of Dutchess County, New York, widow of John White dated 3/2/1810 named sons and daughters, which included "Ellis" (Tabitha's maiden name) White Farrington and Matthew Farrington.]
The Faringtons moved to Portland about 1830. He is listed in the 1800, 1810, and 1820 census Fishkill, Dutchess County, NY [Ref. "Biographical and Portrait Cyclopedia of Chautauqua County, NY", by Hon Obed Edson (1891)] which includes an article on his son Daniel M. and gives the names of Daniel's mother and father. ["Daniel M. Farington was a son of Matthew and Alice (White) Farington, well-to-do and highly respected people of Dutchess county."] They had seven known children, all of whom moved to Chautauqua County. Matthew, Allice, and their children (except Daniel) all joined the West Baptist Church of Portland as Original Members in 1842.
Matthew's will was probated 1857.Chautauqua County, NY. Probate of Estates v. 2 1841-1863, p. 296: "That Matthew Farrington deceased, . . . that said deceased on the second day of April 1857 and that he was a resident of Portland, Chautauqua Co., NY, . . . .that the following persons are all the heirs and next of kin with their ages and place of residence as can be ascertained . . . . Daniel Farrington and Lodema Noxon of full age, residence of Westfield, Chautauqua Co., NY; Edwin W. Farrington of full age, residence of Portland, Chau Co NY; Phebe Burroughs of full age, residence of Ripley, Chautauqua Co., NY; Harriet Andrews of full age, resident of Stockton, Chautauqua Co., NY; Harriet [sic] Woodford, eleven years of age reside at Ripley, Chautauqua County. [The Woodford daughter was named Harriet in 1850, but by 1860 (after the death of Matthew) was known as Charlotte Woodford, later marrying Theodore Morse Hequemborg.] . . . James A. Allen . . . appointed the Special guardian of Harriet Woodford a minor heir and next of kin of said Matthew Harrington deceased for the purpose of taking care of the interest of the said minor on the probate of the will above mentioned."
The only known child not mentioned in his will was Minerva Farrington Monfort, who had died in 1851, and her only surviving son, Martin Edwin Monfort, had died, childless, in 1854.
