While living in Cairo Illinois, he sold fruit on the riverbank to soldiers and one of them made him a commissioned officer at the age of 5. In Omaha, he ran a men's hat shop. He served in the Nebraska Senate and was inspector of curbing and sidewalks. He was active in Masonic orders and was superintendent of concessions at the Trans Mississippi Exposition and was a life member of the Elks.
