YOUNG MAN MEETS ACCIDENTAL DEATH
Thomas Mearl Abbott Fatally Injured While Plowing
on August Schultz Farm Friday

Thomas Mearl Abbott, son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Abbott of this place, was fatally injured last Friday afternoon while plowing on the August Schultz farm about one and one-half miles north of Charter Oak.
Mearl was alone at the time and no-one knows how he accidentally fell off the tractor and became lodged in front of the plow. August Schultz, who was plowing in a nearby field, noticed the tractor standing still and immediately ran over to see what was wrong and found Mearl lodged under the plow, apparently dead then. He ran back to the house and phoned to Charter Oak for help and they lifted the plow from the lifeless body.
Mearl had been employed on the August Schultz farm for the past four years where he was a faithful worker. He was highly respected by those who knew him and his loss will be missed greatly by his relatives and many friends.
Funeral services were held from the St. Boniface church in Charter Oak Monday morning at 9 o'clock with Rev. Arndorfer officiating at Requiem High Mass. Interment was made at St. Ann's cemetery at Vail. The pallbearers were Harry Kral and Murt Hickey of Vail and Walter Staudt, Vernon Leeper, Louis Wellner, and Phillip Coppa of Charter Oak.
Thomas Mearl Abbott, son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Abbott, was born December 1, 1909, near Vail and departed this life April 30, 1937, at the age of 27 years, 4 months and 29 days. He attended rural schools and St. Ann's Academy at Vail. When he reached manhood he was employed on a farm in that vicinity. He came to Charter Oak with his parents when they moved here about five years ago and had resided in this community until his death.
He leaves to mourn his loss, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Abbott, four brothers and four sisters, namely, Lloyd of Vail, Leonard of Cedar Rapids, Orville of Storm Lake, Melvin at home, Mrs. Florence Gary of Denison, Mrs. Dorothy Hansen of Cedar Rapids, Mrs. Donna Creese of this place and Barbara Ann at home, besides many other relatives and friends. One sister, Mary Margaret, preceded him in death.
Those from a distance who attended the funeral Monday were: Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Gary of Denison, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Hansen and children and Leonard Abbott of Cedar Rapids, Orville Abbott of Storm Lake, Lloyd Abbott of Vail, Mrs. Anna Kral of Lake City, Mrs. Mary Chapman of Omaha, Mr. and Mrs. Hugh McCullough and family of Galva, Mr. and Mrs. Adolph Quistorff and family of Sac City, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Kral and family of Glidden, C.H. Johnson, his mother and son Mearl of Wall Lake, Sevilla Slechta of Omaha, and many other relatives and friends from neighboring towns.
