Sue Kim Hanson, her husband Peter Hanson, and their 2 ½ -year-old daughter Christine lost their lives during the attacks on the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. Aboard United Airlines Flight 175 en route to Los Angeles from Boston, the Groton MA family planned to combine Peter Hanson's business trip with a visit with Sue's 83-year-old grandmother and a day at Disneyland.
Theirs was the second plane to hit the World Trade Center that morning. Christine was the youngest victim of the 9/11 attacks.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Sue was born in Los Angeles, California. She spent her early childhood in Korea, returning to Los Angeles at age 6. She graduated from South Pasadena High School in 1984 and in 1989 she received a B.A. degree in biology and psychology from the University of California, Berkley.
After graduation she worked for Cetus Corporation and was involved with early development of gene amplification by polymerase chain reaction. She moved to Boston and earned a M.A. in medical sciences from Boston University School of Medicine. After graduation, she joined the laboratory of Dr. Hardy Kornfeld in the Pulmonary Center at BUSM. While in the Kornfeld laboratory, she concurrently entered the Ph.D. program in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine (immunology track) at BUSM on a full scholarship. Sue's thesis project was an investigation of the role of interleukin-16 in immunity. She had completed her dissertation and was preparing to defend her dissertation in November of 2001.
Posthumously, Sue was awarded a Ph.D. in immunology and pathology by unanimous vote of her thesis committee. In her memory, an annual lecture in immunology was established in her name at BU, which takes place every September 11th. Outstanding researchers in the field of immunology are invited to speak and meet with graduate students and faculty.
She was survived by her grandmother, Ok-Hee Kim of California and her brothers, Stanley and John of California.
