Donald E. Martin, age 90, of Pittsfield, IL passed away on Tuesday, May 7, 2019 at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield, IL. He was born on October 2, 1928 in Clayton, IL to Otis and Lena Osterman Martin. He married Deloras Kelly in Clayton, IL on December 31, 1954, and she survives.

Don graduated from Clayton High School in 1946, where he played many sports and received the Chicago Tribune Honorable Mention Award for basketball. He went on to join the United States Army and was awarded two bronze stars for his service in the Korean War in the 2nd Infantry Division. After his Honorable Discharge from the U.S. Army, Don began his career as a bricklayer/plasterer contractor. He and Deloras then moved to Pittsfield in 1965 to begin working for Moormon’s, later worked for Cargill, and then returned to farming and contracting. Don was a longtime member of the Pittsfield First Christian Church, a member of the Pittsfield American Legion Post #152, and a past member of the Pittsfield Moose Lodge #420.

Don was an avid sports fan and a huge supporter of the Pittsfield sports teams, being voted Mr. Saukee three different times. He also loved fishing, as well as quail and pheasant hunting. He and Deloras travelled all over the world together to places such as Hawaii, Alaska, Europe, and the Caribbean, which they greatly enjoyed. Don was a jack of all trades and was known in the community as the person to call when something needed fixed. He was very dedicated to the town and the people living in it, never meeting a stranger. He was a loving and devoted father and husband, and will be missed for his great sense of humor.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Deloras; his son, Jeff (Susan) Martin; grandchildren, Kaytlyn (Shelby) Richard and Hannah Kennedy; a great grandson, Caleb Richard; brother-in-law, Vernon Kelly; nieces and nephews, Chris Moore, Lena Borrowman, Danny Martin, Judy Hull, Darcie Brooks, Lena Kelly, Greg Kelly, Ricky Kelly, Connie Kelly, and Crystal Kelly.
