Death Takes B.T. Rozelle, Local Resident
Bazil T. Rozelle, 76, resident of Compton, CA since 1890, died last Thursday at the Las Campanas Hospital where Mr. Rozelle was taken seriously ill two weeks earlier. The Rozelle family has been well known in Compton for many years. He was prominent in church and civic affairs in the community. His sons in their younger years became famous in athletics and one of them, the late “Pat” Rozelle, was for a number of years prior to his death constable of Compton Township. Mr. Rozelle was a retired rancher born in Anderson, Indiana where he was a graduate of Anderson high school. He came here 51 years ago at the age of 25. He farmed for many years a ranch located partly in what is now the Los Angeles River in the Lynwood Gardens section bordering the northeast edge of Compton. He had one of the early day large size automobiles that he kept in his barn. In the great flood of 1914, the river cut a new channel a half mile west of its former course. In this flood, the car was swept away and seemed lost forever. However, six years later it was found buried in the mud. Retrieved, the car started up and ran perfectly according to Mr. Rozelle. He survived his wife Edith Rozelle, who passed away five years ago. Family members surviving include his sons, W.O. Rozelle of Chino; Raymond F. Rozelle of Lynwood; Elmer D. Rozelle of Clearwater; E Glen Rozelle of Compton; and Ralph L. “Joe” Rozelle of Compton; a daughter, Mrs. Mabel Miles of Compton; three brothers, M.A. Rozelle of Compton and Chester A. Rozelle and C.J. Roselle, both of Anderson, Indiana, ten grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Funeral services held Saturday. Interment was at Angeles Abbey Mausoleum
