John Ernest Jung, age 98, died on Thursday, March 24, 2011, at Riverwood Estates in Manitowoc.

He was born July 15, 1912, in Shawano, the son of the late Gustave and Mabel Jung. John was raised in Shawano, where he attended public schools and graduated from Shawano High School in 1930. He attended Ripon College on an athletic scholarship, majoring in chemistry and mathematics, and graduating in 1934. He received his MA degree in guidance counseling from the University of Wisconsin in 1948. He began his teaching and coaching career in Necedah, Wis., in 1936. In 1939, he accepted a job in Manitowoc teaching science and mathematics at Washington Junior High School and going up to Lincoln High School to coach football, basketball and track. John took ROTC at Ripon and was a 2nd Lt. in the Reserves. As WWII approached, he decided to marry his fiance, Berniece Dawes, who was teaching in Wausau. They drove to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, at Christmas and were married in the First Methodist Church on Dec. 27, 1941.

John was called into service in 1942, and spent until 1946 teaching officer candidates depot and supply at different posts in the USA. He remained in the Reserve Corp until he retired in 1961 as a Lt. Colonel. John returned from the service to teach and coach at Lincoln High School in Manitowoc. He was a guidance counselor and the athletic director until the time of his retirement in 1977. As head basketball coach, his teams won five conference championships, and three teams went to the state in 1958, 1961, (both consolation champs) and 1963, when they won their first state basketball championship. Jung's basketball reputation got him inducted into the Lakeshore Hall of Fame and the State Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame in Madison.

John was a member of St. Paul's Methodist Church, where he served in many capacities, Maritime Museum, Elks Lodge 687, Capitol Civic Centre, Masonic Lodge, life member of Manitowoc Retired Educators Association, Manitowoc County Historical Society and the Woodland Dunes Nature Center.

John was preceded in death by his parents: Gustave and Mabel; and two brothers: Lloyd and Ernest Jung. He is survived by his wife: Berniece of Manitowoc; one daughter: Karen (Robert) Gerdes of Bloomington, Minn.; and one son: Robert (Judy) of St. Point; four grandchildren: Jon Jung of Manitowoc, Andrew Jung of Green Bay, Heidi Gerdes (Noah) Schuchman of Minneapolis, Minn., and Peter Gerdes of Brainard, Minn.; great-grandchildren: Charlie and Eliza Bea Schuchman.

Services will be held at Lakeshore Methodist Church, 411 Reed Ave., Manitowoc, on Saturday, March 26, 2011, at 3 p.m. The Rev. Thomas J. Dunham will officiate. Visitation will begin one hour prior to the service.

Memorials preferred to Lakeshore Methodist Church.
