WIGHT--Thomas Edward (Ted) Wight, 90, passed away on May 18, 2019 at his home in Jacksonville, Florida, from complications with COPD. He was born April 15, 1929 in Cairo, Georgia to Henry and Maude Wight. He grew up in Cairo, Georgia then moved to Jacksonville, Florida where he graduated from Robert E. Lee High School. Ted served in the military as a Naval Electrician and Communicator on the USS LSM 398 during World War II.

Ted graduated from Trevecca Nazarene University with the class of ’54 and received his master’s degree from the University of Florida.

Ted dedicated his life to teaching through a variety of roles; professionally as a minister, public school teacher, principal and counselor, serving in both Clay and Duval Counties. He was also a teacher in his personal pursuits as Sunday school teacher, an avid student of God’s Word, and sharing his affection for language, laughter and love for family and friends, through a monthly newsletter he called NEIGHBORS CONNECTING. His greatest personal desire was that everyone he came in contact with would receive an encouraging word from him, and be pointed to his Savior, Jesus Christ. He wrote and published a book titled THE LITTLE HEPA’ AND THE BIG WAR in honor of his Uncle Tom who was killed in World War II.

Ted was passionate about gardens, planting flowers, fig trees, and citrus and tomato plants around every house where he lived, creating a beautiful environment for his family. He enjoyed taking photographs of scenery and family, and even developed prints in his own darkroom. He could fashion a stunning table lamp, candleholder or even an entire wall bookcase out of discarded pieces of wood. He shared his appreciation of all types of music with his family, from classical to Gospel and musicals to Spike Jones. He was a deeply proud, patriotic American, flying flags in the yard, magnets on his car, and pins on his lapel.

Ted Wight was predeceased in death by his son, H. Clarke Wight, his brother Reggie Wight, and both of his parents. He is survived by his wife Geraldine (nee Garrison) of 67 years, three daughters, Rebecca Turner (Sam), Carol Wight, Margaret Sprague (Butch), seven grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, his sister, Julia Kurtz (Ralph), and sister-in-law, Marilyn Wight.

Friends and family will be received for visitation on Wednesday, May 22 from 5:00-7:00 pm at Jacksonville Memory Gardens, 111 Blanding Blvd., Orange Park, Florida. A celebration of life service will be held on Thursday, May 23 at 11:00 am at Oak Hill Church of the Nazarene, 4151 Old Middleburg Rd., Jacksonville,
Florida. A private family graveside burial will follow.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Northeast Community Hospice Foundation, 4266 Sunbeam Road, Jacksonville, FL 32257, in gratitude for their generous care of Ted, or to the University Boulevard Church of the Nazarene, 3930 University Blvd. S., Jacksonville, FL 32216, where Ted worshiped.
