(1918 - 2015)

Berniece Irene (Dawes) Jung, age 96, of Manitowoc, died Monday, August 3, 2015 at River Woods Place.

Berniece Irene Dawes was born August 24th, 1918 in Strongs Prairie, WI, daughter of the late Jesse and Alice (Scovell) Dawes. Berniece graduated from Necedah High School in Necedah, WI and Stevens Point Teachers College. She married John on December 27th, 1941 and after a year's teaching experience in Wausau, WI she joined John for four years while he taught in Army Training Grounds during WWII. They returned to Manitowoc, WI where John had been teaching prior to the war. Berniece returned to teaching in 1953. She was a wonderful first grade teacher for thirty years, loved by students and respected by her peers. She was innovative and creative in her teaching methods always working at bringing out the best in all of her students. Many children benefited from her teaching them how to read and giving them the gift of a love for reading. She was a forerunner of women's rights teaching at a time when most married women were at home.

Berniece was active at St. Paul's Methodist Church in many capacities as a leader. She was also a member of AAUW, Manitowoc County Historical Society, and was a descendant of "William Dawes Who Rode With Paul Revere". Bea was a consummate baker - known for her apple pie, sweet rolls, and special desserts she made and shared with many in the community. She also could sew and create something out of nothing - a gift she acquired during the depression when life necessitated her to do so.

She is survived by one son: Robert (Judy) Jung, Stevens Point; one daughter: Karen (Robert) Gerdes, Bloomington, MN; two brothers: Duane and Larry Dawes, CA; four grandchildren; two great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends also survive. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband: John; and four brothers.

A private graveside celebration will be held later this month. Memorials may be sent to: , 7900 West 78th Street, Suite 100, Bloomington, MN 55439. The Jens Family Funeral Home & Crematory is assisting the family with funeral arrangements. Online condolences may be expressed at www.jensreinboldandpfeffer.com

She was a gifted wife, mother, and grandmother and a "giver" to many others. Thank you to the wonderful staff at River Woods Place where she resided with John until his death and then for her final years, their considerate care was greatly appreciated by her family.
