Lucy Susan Barnes, age 80, of Mauston, died on Sunday, May 19, 2019 at University Hospital in Madison. She was born on July 10, 1938 in Seven Mile Creek Township, the daughter of Frank and Anna (Sullivan) Fitzgerald. Lucy attended country school near the family farm. She was a 1957 graduate of Mauston High School. Lucy then attended the Juneau County Normal School. Later she received her Master's Degree from UW at Stevens Point. She taught in a few country schools including Milton School and the Dellona School. Later she taught at St. Patrick's School in Mauston and St. Cecelia's School in Wisconsin Dells. Lucy then taught for the next forty years for the Mauston School District until her retirement in 1998. But that didn't stop her. She continued to teach and subbed for the next twenty-one years. On November 26, 1959, she married Lawrence "Larry" Barnes. Lucy was a woman whose passion was teaching. She also took great pride in her Irish heritage. Lucy composed a family history book which has been enjoyed by many relatives. She was always available to help anyone in need. Lucy has a love for flowers and wildlife which she enjoyed feeding and watching. Survivors include her children: Theresa (Peter) Gosda, Ellen (Randy Varsho) Keen, John (Tisha Hull) Barnes and Katherine Day; her grandsons: Nicholas, Jacob, Robert and Mike; her granddaughter: Samantha; special friends: Don and Michelle Schneider; her (almost sister) niece: Bridge Lawrence; sisters-in-law: Patricia Fitzgerald and Margaret Barnes; many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Larry; her parents; her sisters: Geraldine (Lyle) Kranz, Mary (Henry) Gonzales, Rose Finlayson, Cecelia (Maurice) LaRue and Iona Fitzgerald; her brothers: Francis (Vanita) Fitzgerald, Dennis (Berta) Fitzgerald, Mike (Delores) Fitzgerald and Patrick Fitzgerald; sister-in-law: Gerda Scharfenberg and two brothers-in-law: Richard Barnes and Harry Scharfenberg. A Memorial Mass will be conducted at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, May 25, 2019 at Holy Family Catholic Church in LaValle with Father Santus will be officiating. Inurnment will be at Calvary Cemetery in Ironton. There will be a visitation from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. on Friday at the Hoof Funeral Home in Reedsburg and after 10:00 A.M. on Saturday at the church. The Hoof Funeral Home is serving the family.
