John Lewis, 78, of Cambridge, died Wednesday, March 22, at Sunny View Care Center in Ankeny. Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 25, at Nazareth Lutheran Church in Cambridge. Inurnment will be in Cambridge Cemetery.
John was born Dec. 28, 1927, in Cambridge, the son of Clarence and Hilda (Lee) Lewis. He graduated from Huxley High School in 1945 and attended Iowa State Teachers College. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He married Ione Elizabeth Miller Jan. 24, 1953 in Ames. He farmed near Cambridge until he retired. He was an active member of Nazareth Lutheran Church of Cambridge. He enjoyed his family, reading and playing cards.
He is survived by his wife, Ione, of Cambridge; one daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Larry Shaeffer of Des Moines; three sons and one daughter-in-law, Mark Lewis of Cambridge and his fiancé, Eileen Young, Steve and Becky Lewis of Collins and David Lewis of Cambridge; seven grandchildren; one sister, Viola Van Gilder of Seattle, Wash.; and one brother and sister-in-law, Truman and Deloris Lewis of Urbandale.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters Norma Lewis and Doris Lewis.
Memorials may be made to Nazareth Lutheran Church.
