This was my grandfather. He was born in 1898, his brother was my namesake, Mark Thomas Meeks. He married the former Ethel L Cutchen on 5 Oct 1927 in Compass Lake, FL. He converted to the LDS Church beforehand and they were sealed on 12 September 1928 in the Mesa Arizona Temple. They were the parents of three children: Samuel Martin (my dad), Homer Dodwell, Jr. (whom was called Rip), and Susan Frances. He held down an number of jobs during his lifetime, but had a garden in the backyard of his house in Dothan, AL. His wife died in 1970, and he was left alone to carry on. Dad had made a tape of his dad's experiences in Granddad's own words, which he later transcribed and sent, along with other family history, to us kids.
He would always give us kids nicknames. He gave me the moniker "curious" because I always was. When I was a teenager he changed my nickname to "catkiller" because of the old saying, "Curiosity killed the cat."
The last time I heard from him I was living in San Francisco. I decided to call my parents who were living at the time in Orange, CA. Becky, my youngest sister, told me the granddad was there and if I would like to talk to him. I said to put him on. We start talking, and he says, in his southern drawl, "How do you get off sounding like your father?" He died about a week later.
He is buried in the family plot in Compass Lake.
When he was alive, he would always told us scripture based riddles. One was, "He was the oldest man who ever lived, but died before his father did." Another was, "Jesus told Lazarus to come forth. Who were the three who preceded him?" Sometimes he would take out his dentures and ask us if we could do that? He was fun to be with.
