Mary, the second of five children, was born Sept. 12, 1908, at Randolph, Neb., the daughter of Victor and Daisy Sutton Howarth. Mary was raised and educated in the sand hills of Nebraska. As a young girl, Mary enjoyed riding horses. At the age of 14, she went to Omaha, Neb., to work for a family caring for their children; she later met and married Henry P. Mitchell on June 20, 1926, in Omaha, Neb.
In earlier years, all holidays and many Sundays, Mary's home was the gathering place for relatives and friends to feast on her baked goods and culinary skills. She later worked as seamstress for Miller and Paine and J. Braggs Department Stores in Lincoln, Neb., while raising her eight children. She loved being a mother and grandmother and was dearly loved by her entire family. Up until the age of 100, she was always kept busy doing embroidery work, crocheting and sewing for the entire family, every one of which has a complete set of tea towels.
Mary is survived by her six children, Shirley Dunlap of Omaha, Neb., Betty Jo Zweiner of Twin Falls, David (Shirley) Mitchell of Kingman, Ariz., Mary (Don) Aten of Loveland, Colo., George (Linda) Mitchell of Kennewick, Wash., and Mike (Cleo) Mitchell of Marysville, Wash.; 26 grandchildren; 54 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two sons, Jim and John; three brothers; and a sister.
A rosary prayer service will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, May 13, at Reynolds Funeral Chapel, 2466 Addison Ave. E. in Twin Falls. A memorial service for Mary will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 14, at Reynolds Funeral Chapel.
