Mrs. Mary Virginia Howell
Mrs. Mary Virginia Howell, widow of the late Josiah Howell Sr., Oregon City pioneer, passed away Thursday morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Minnie McGregor of Portland, with whom she had made her home for the past year.
Mrs. Howell was born in St. Louis, MO., October 20, 1841, and daughter of Jacob and Mary Willis, crossing the plains in 1847.Mr. Willis died on the plains, and the horses were then driven for the widow by Mr. Hackett, father of E. C. Hackett. The mother took up a donation land claim near what is now Mt. Pleasant. In later years Mary Willis married Mr. Howell. She had resided in Clackamas County for almost 86 years, the larger part of the time at Canemah in the little white home that still overlooks that place. She was a charter member of the local Rebekah lodge having gone through all chairs and member for 45 years.
Mrs. Howell is survived by her sons, William H. Howell, Oregon City; Joseph Howell, Los Angeles; George E. Howell, Clackamas, and two daughters, Mrs. Minnie M McGregor and Mrs. Myrtle C. Martyn, Portland, besides 12 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild. Mr. Howell passed away 21 years ago.
The funeral service will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at the chapel of Holman, Pace & Hankins. Interment will be in the Mountain View cemetery.
Many friends paid final tribute to the memory of Mary Virginia Howell, Canemah pioneer, Saturday afternoon at funeral services conducted by Rev. J. A. Cleland, rector of St Paul's church, in the Holman, Pace & Hankins funeral chapel. Floral tributes were beautiful. Willamette Rebekah lodge No. 2, of which Mrs. Howell was a charter member, attended the rites in a body.
Mrs. Maude Bowen of Portland sang. Pallbearers were six grandsons; Samuel and Benjamin Jaggar, W. B. Howell, George E. Howell Jr., W. H. McGregor and J. C. Dirk. Interment was in Mountain View cemetery.
Mary was my Great Great Grandmother. Contrary to this newspaper article her daughter my Great Grandmother Minnie left a note that told how Jacob died in the California gold fields at the Feather River. He had taken a heard of cattle down to sell to the minors and after he sold them he was "slept to death" as she put it...murdered for the gold. Great Great Great Grandpa Jacob Willis did make it to Oregon he had made several failed Donation Land Claims here the year before he died. Surprisingly there is also no mention of her mother (Mary Willis my Great Great Great grandmother) marring again to Samuel Vance after Jacob's death. (I don't believe everything I read in the newspapers)...
