Benjiman H. Ellerbeck, 88, of Raytown died after a lengthy illness at home, surrounded by family, August 16, 2011.
Ben was born to Meda (Miller) Ellerbeck and Benjamin H. Ellerbeck Sr. on November 20, 1922 in California, MO. He was raised in Garden City, Kan., moved to Richmond, and graduated high school in 1941. He was married to LaVerne (Endsley) Ellerbeck December 29, 1946, and cherished each other’s companionship for 64 years. She survives of the home.Ben was a part of The Greatest Generation, serving in World War II. His active duty was June 1944 to February 1946. He was proud of the time he served as a 1st Lieutenant with the United States Army Air Corps. He served overseas with the 8th Combat Cargo Squadron and 400th Bomb Squadron in the Asiatic Pacific Theater. His duties were to pilot C-47 and C-46 type aircraft, command, and supervise crew. He had a total of 930 hours of flying time. When he told stories, he preferred to focus on the positive experiences of his service. Ben spent a long career with the United States Postal Service at the Richmond Post Office. He retired as Postmaster of Hardin in December 1980. He seemed to know just about everyone in town and his customers will remember his helpful attitude and concern for them. He was also known for his ability to repair furniture, appliances, or remodel homes. Ben and LaVerne enjoyed a long retirement. They loved to travel together, usually choosing the less traveled back roads. They owned a second home at the Lake of the Ozarks for many years. The family has fond memories of the times they spent together. Ben was active in church throughout his lifetime, spent much time volunteering for the church and supported the youth groups. Ben and LaVerne lived in Richmond until moving to Raytown in 1995. He was a member of One Spirit United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents and older brother, Ellis Ellerbeck.Survivors include his wife and three daughters: Rita and Earl Murray, Connie Kleinbeck, and Audrey and Joe Smelser, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and many more “adopted” friends and family.
