Boy, 10, Killed In Farm Mishap

A Manitowoc County farm boy was killed Sunday morning in an accident involving a self-unloading chopper wagon. Jeffrey Karstaedt, 10, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Karstaedt of R. 1, Kiel (Town of Meeme) died after he was pulled into the chopper wagon while inspecting a malfunction of the mechanism.

The accident occurred on the Karstaedt farm located about a mile southwest of School Hill on Highway 149. Two witnesses said the boy had been operating a tractor which was pulling the chopper wagon. When the chopper malfunctioned, Jeffrey dismounted from the tractor, leaned into the chopper to check the malfunction, and was pulled head first into the machine.

Manitowoc County Coroner James Powers pronounced the boy dead at the scene.

Jeffrey was born Oct. 27, 1961 in Sheboygan. His mother is the former Delores Perl.

He was a fourth grade student at Meeme Elementary School and attended Sunday school at Zion Lutheran Church at Louis Corners.

Survivors include his parents; three sisters, Debra, Mary Beth and Kim, and two brothers, Glenn and Todd all at home; maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Perl of Sheboygan; paternal grandfather, Frank Karstaedt of Kiel, and maternal great-grandmother, Mrs. Emma Perl of Sheboygan.

He was preceded in death by a sister.

Funeral Wednesday

Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Zion Lutheran Church at Louis Corners. The Rev. Adalbert Schultz, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Friends may call after 3 p.m. Tuesday at the Meiselwitz Funeral Home at Kiel until 11 a.m. Wednesday and at the church from noon until time of service.
