He was the son of Sam and Daisy (Hutchison) Murphy and married Tommie Loucille Shetter - 20 Oct 1934 - Coffee Co., Tennessee. His obituary follows:

Ed Murphy, age 86, a farmer and resident of Estill Springs, died May 21 at Southern Tennessee Medical Center. He is survived by his wife, Loucille Murphy of Estill Springs; a daughter, Elaine Ragsdale of Nashville; two sisters, Gladys Adams of Madison and Idell Adams of Tullahoma; three brothers, Loyd Murphy of Manchester, Ernie Murphy of Hillsboro, and Elzie Murphy of Gainesville, Georgia; one granddaughter, Felicia Ragsdale of Nashville. Graveside services were conducted May 22 at 3:30 p.m. from Franklin Memorial Gardens with Bro. David Lawrence officiating. Moore-Cortner Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
