In 1934, Asther was blacklisted in Hollywood for breaking his contract. He moved to Britain for a few years and made a couple of films. He worked sporadically when he returned to Hollywood but ended up driving a truck to earn a living in 1949. His final film was Suddenly, A Woman (1963).
Asther was Gay. He had a "lavender marriage" (1930-32) with Vivian Duncan - one of the performing Duncan Sisters. Their union produced one daughter. He had short term relationships with a Swedish director and writer, and a longer relationship with a Hollywood stuntman, and WWII veteran named Ken DuMain. He remained friends with Garbo.
