Loren Dale Mays, 84, of Lodi, died March 21. He was born in Ketchum, Okla. on Dec. 5, 1923.
Mr. Mays moved to the Central Valley during the Dust Bowl, while in high school. He met his longtime wife, Myrtle Cecilia Mays, at Galt High School and corresponded with her while serving in World War II in the U.S. Army. They married in 1943 after he was honorably discharged. He graduated from the College of the Pacific (now the University of the Pacific) in 1956 and attended the University of California for a year.
Mr. Mays and his wife bought the Lodi Life and Times in 1982. He also worked for the Lockeford Clements News with his daughter-in-law, Laura Mays. He had a variety of careers from head chemist and general manager of the Lockeford Winery, accountant for the state Board of Equalization, auto salesman and newspaper publisher. He served as a Boy Scout master from 1954-58.
He is survived by his three sons; a daughter; nine grandchildren and eight (great) grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Myrtle Mays, in 1988, and his second wife, Billie Jean Mays, in 2005; and his great-grandson Joshua Gardner.
