Stella Rutan (1920 - 2019) Stella Rutan (White) was born to Daniel White and Wanda Kippen in Porterville, Utah. She was the surviving older sister of Ruby and Zella. Stella’s mother passed away when she was four years of age so she went to live with relatives as her father was unable to care for all three girls. She attended one year of college in Utah before moving to California. During World War II, she worked as a machinist making parts and later worked in the Hollister Spring Factory. In 1947, Stella married Alfred Rutan and eventually settled in La Mirada in the home in which she lived the rest of her life. They were married 62 years and after Al passed away, Stella stayed in her wonderful neighborhood on Brass Lantern Drive. Stella loved to cook, crochet, and take care of everyone around her, including the neighborhood cats. Stella’s recipes for her famous fudge chocolate cake, apple pie with the best crust ever, and stuffed shells are cherished by family and friends alike. Stella spent many hours making beautiful baby afghans for all of her grandchildren and great- grandchildren. Those blankets have become treasured memories of the love she showered on her family members. After the death of her beloved poodle Peppi, Stella became the cat whisperer. The neighborhood cats would spend their days lounging and being pampered in her home while their owners were away. At least one of these cats relocated to Stella’s home, loving the attention she showered on him. Stella is survived by her son Bill, granddaughters Denise, Michele, Lisa and Jennifer, great-grandchildren Corey, Kylie, Katherine and Tori, several nieces and nephews, and many caring friends, family and neighbors. She was able to stay in her home until the very end, thanks to the excellent care provided by her loving Nephew Jim (Jamey). Stella was sweet and sassy. Her favorite line at the age of 98 was, “They say only the good die young. I knew I was bad, but I didn’t think I was that bad!” Her independent nature and no-nonsense disposition stayed with her until the end. She will truly be missed by all who knew and loved her.
