James Burton "Bertie" Johns' family was farming in Hamilton County, Florida at the time of his birth. About 1900, Bertie moved from Hamilton County to Lafayette County with his family. His father, with assistance from family members, farmed property they owned and served as a preacher.

The World I Registration Card completed on September 12, 1918 shows that Bertie was born March 7, 1885 and was medium height and build and had black hair and eyes. His nearest relative was Allie Johns an indication he was married. However, the 1910 and 1920 census show he was single.

The 1920 census also shows that Bertie was living in Lafayette County with his parents and brothers Roy, Seth and Grover.
