Donald Lee Roat, 84, died Nov. 12, 2006, in Eugene, Ore.

He was born June 5, 1922, in Red Lodge to Aldoph Roat and Alice Van Dyke Roat. He attended Red Lodge schools, and served in the Navy during World War II aboard merchant marine ships.

Don married Martha Ropp of Cody and she preceded him in death in 1983. They had six children. He later married Gloria Faught of Oakridge, Ore.

His working years included operating heavy equipment in Yellowstone Park, chrome mining, open pit uranium mining in Jeffrey City, mill work in Oregon and Libby, Mont., and then finally retiring after several years of work for the Oregon Department of Highways.

During his retirement he and Gloria enjoyed their yard, fruit trees, salmon fishing at Winchester Bay, Ore., traveling south to their home in Yuma, Ariz., for the winters where they danced, played cards and he designed jewelry and faceted gem stones.

They had recently moved from Oakridge to Springfield, Ore.

To his family and others he demonstrated a good, honest, work ethic, the passion for beauty and purpose of nature and geology, and always gave his fellow man the "benefit of the doubt," as he would say.

He is survived by his wife, children Hazel (Jerry) Klein of Laurel, Mont., Donald (Connie) Roat Jr., of Salt Lake City, William (Vicki) Roat of Oakridge, and Henry (Shirley) Roat of Albany, Ore., stepchildren William (Chris) Faught and Jill (Malcom) Burrell, sister Alice (Robert) Trevino of Laredo, Texas, 20 grandchildren, and several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife Martha, sons Frank Roat and Gary Roat, and stepson Jack Faught.

A graveside memorial service will be conducted at the Red Lodge Cemetery at 2 p.m. June 21.

Services were held previously at Oakridge United Methodist Church in November. Remembrances can be made to the Carbon County Museum in Red Lodge or a charity of choice.
