During the eruption a young American named Bayard, son of ex-Senator Bayard, was struck by a stone projected from the burning crater, which nearly severed one of his arms, causing a hemorrhage which lasted sixty hours. At the end of that time the limb was amputated, but lock-jaw supervened and the unfortunate man died. The funeral took place on the 20th of February, and the body was followed to the grave by all the Americans in Naples."
