Born in Maryland, he migrated with his parents and siblings down the Ohio River on a flatboat to Dearborn County, Indiana in 1817. He grew up there near Sparta and Moores Hill.

He first married Maria L. Olmstead on March 8, 1832. They had two sons, John O. and Charles W., before she died August 31, 1838 at College Hill, Ohio. William married his second wife, Henrietta Wellsburger,about 1840 and probably in Ohio. She was a native of Frankfurt, Hessen, Germany and bore him nine children: Mary E., Benjamin Frank, Sarah, Hiram W., Jane L., Joseph Edward, Samuel Henry, Paul Frank, and Anna Catherine.

They moved with other Johnson family members to Jackson County, Iowa about 1843, but were in Dyer County, Tennessee by 1860, where he and Henrietta lived the rest of their lives. He was a brick mason.
