POQUOSON - John Elbert Blair, 79, passed away Saturday, Aug. 16, 2008. Born Dec. 9, 1928, in Chatham, Va., to Charles and Mae Blair, he was a Virginia Tech graduate and retired from Newport News Shipbuilding (Tenneco). He was a member of Tabernacle United Methodist Church and the Sunday School 'Friendship Bible Class' (better known as Rosalyn's Class), and until last year, was a church usher for 20 years.

Mr. Blair was a member of Poquoson Masonic Lodge #49, AF & AM and St. Tammany Lodge #5; was a 33rd Degree Mason in the Scottish Rite; a member of the Khedive Temple and Peninsula Shrine Club; and was affiliated with many other Masonic organizations. He served in the U.S. Air Force, and was a member of American Legion Poquoson Post 273.

Mr. Blair was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, and one sister. He is survived by his wife, Sylvia Berry Blair, and her children, William 'Bill' Lawson (Nancy) and Leigh Lawson-Everstine (Don), and grandchildren, Amanda, Rebecca, and Ben Lawson. Also surviving are three children from a previous marriage, Marguerite Wells (David), Susan Aspell (David) and Jay Blair (Theresa), and grandchildren, Dana Wells, Matthew Wells, Bobby Wilkerson, Jamie Blair and Andy Blair; and Theresa's two children, Emily and Matthew.

Masonic Rites will be held 6:45 p.m. Tuesday at Claytor Rollins Funeral Home, followed by visitation until 8:30 p.m. A funeral service will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Tabernacle United Methodist Church by the Rev. Dr. Bill Wash. Entombment will follow at Peninsula Memorial Park, Newport News, with military honors.
