U.S. Congressman. Moving to Indiana, he taught school for several years, later graduated from the law department of the University of Michigan in 1867, was admitted to bar and opened a law firm in Crown Point, Indiana. He was treasurer of lake County (1870-72), prosecuting attorney of Lake County, (1872-76) and a member of the Indiana State Senate (1878-82). In 1883, he was elected as a Democrat to the Forty-eighth Congress, serving until 1885. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he resumed the practice of law until his death.
