Wayne Louis Albert "Porky" Portzen, 70, of Portage, died Tuesday, June 19, 2007, at Hospice Care in Fitchburg after a long battle with diabetes, vascular disease and prostate cancer.

Wayne was born June 9, 1937, and was a lifelong resident of the Portage area. He graduated from Portage High School in 1955. Wayne served in the military after graduation, where he was stationed in Okinawa, Japan. Wayne also worked for Bidwell Ice Cream, The Portage Hosiery and NK Mills. He was an avid outdoorsman and bowler. Wayne enjoyed hunting and fishing his whole life, especially musky fishing in Clam Lake and going for rides on a pontoon boat on his beloved Big Slough.

He also enjoyed just going for rides in the countryside. In his later years, he really enjoyed turkey hunting and planting summer flowers.

Wayne also enjoyed going to visit his son out West, where they visited Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus and St. Mary Catholic Church.

Wayne was preceded in death by his parents, Albert "Al" Portzen and Alvera "Bea" Raimer Portzen. He is survived by two sons, Jon Christopher Portzen of Portage and Philip Albert (Dawn) Portzen of Livingston, Mont.; his sister, Judy (Tom) Ness of Portage; his brother, Gary (Barb) Portzen of Plover; his aunt, Stella Carney of Portage; and nieces, nephews, other near relatives and many close friends.

Mass of Christian burial will be held at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary Catholic Church, Portage, with Father Jim Murphy presiding. Burial will follow in St. Mary Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Pflanz Mantey Mendrala Funeral Home, Portage, and from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the church.

Special thanks to Doloris Weishoff, Joanne Russell and Eleanor Scheel for all their help. Wayne's family also thanks the staff at University of Wisconsin Hospital and Hospice Care Inc. for all they did for Wayne and his family through this time.
