Vern was a 1950 graduate of Felch High School.
He served with the United States Army military police during the Korean War.
On Oct. 20, 1956, Vern married the former Joyce Lindgren at First Covenant Church in Iron Mountain. She preceded him in death on Nov. 3, 2007.
He worked for more than 30 years at Niagara Paper, retiring in 1993.
Vern was an active member of First Covenant Church in Iron Mountain and was involved in the visitation ministries of the church. When he wasn't working at the mill, he loved working in the woods and was a pulp cutter his entire life. Vern enjoyed gardening and working in his yard. He most enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren.
He is survived by two sons: Paul (Tracy) Swanson of Iron Mountain, MI and Peter (Brenda) Swanson of Niagara, WI;
his daughter, Rochelle (Larry) Lidbeck of Iron Mountain, MI;
a brother, Wallace (Carol) Swanson of Tennessee
and a sister, Alice Tipton of Oregon;
eight grandchildren: Heather and Andrew Lidbeck, Aaryn, Caressa and Bryce Swanson, John, Michael and Joey Swanson
and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents and his wife, Vern was preceded in death by three sisters: Marion Johnson, Anne McCormick-Riggs and Ruth Usrey.
Visitation will be Thursday from 10 a.m. to 12 noon at the First Covenant Church in Iron Mountain. Memorial services will be Thursday at 12 noon. Rev. Peter Erickson and Rev. Karl Utzat will co-officiate.
