Margaret Mitchell, author of the classic novel, Gone With the Wind, was Dorothy's best friend at Washington Seminary in Atlanta when they were in their late teens. To make extra money to go to an Anapolis dance where they had bids, Margaret would make up stories and dictate them to Dorothy. Dorothy typed them and Margaret had them published under a pen name. Dorothy and Margaret made their debut in Atlanta at the same debutante club. The pre-debut tea was held at the home of Dorothy's parents. It is said that Margaret used the Merriweather name in her novel from her acquaintance with Dorothy's family & her mother's side Meriwether roots.
