What should have been a happy time ended in sorrow for Francisco Xavier Garcia and his wife, Carly Jo Sarrels.

Garcia and Sarrels held their newborn son Gabriel Xavier Garcia just a few minutes before he died Saturday. Gabriel was delivered by emergency Caesarean section Thursday after a traffic accident on U.S. 87/287 North, at the Hastings Avenue intersection.

"We loved him," Sarrels said. "He is in our hearts every day."

On Thursday, a southbound silver Mazda allegedly hit the back end of a southbound purple Dodge pickup. The collision sent the pickup over a guardrail, police said.

The pickup went down an embankment, rolled once and landed on the north side of Hastings.

Garcia, 26, was driving the pickup with Sarrels as a passenger. He and Sarrels, 30, were taken to Northwest Texas Hospital, where their son was delivered, Garcia said. Sarrels was nine months pregnant.

Police are awaiting results of an autopsy of the newborn.

Gabriel weighed 8 pounds, 12 ounces at birth and was 21 inches long, Garcia said.

"He was the bravest person I ever met," Garcia said. "I'm so proud to be his father."

Garcia still is recovering in the hospital with his wife. Their son was in a lot of pain, they said.

"They took him off all the monitors, and we held him," Garcia said.

Garcia said he and his wife appreciate all of the thoughts and prayers they have received.
