John Wesley Brown of Mansfield, Arkansas died Saturday, March 27, 1993 at his home in Mansfield. He was born in Scott County , Arkansas, in 1921. Johnnie weighed just over 1 1/2 pound at his premature birth and according to his mother, Hazel Brown, he was a "5 month" baby.Johnny, as he was better known, was a Master Mason and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. He was very active in the lodge, until a dispute between the Masons and Eastern Star came about. Since he felt that the Grand Lodge and the local mason were not upholding their promises, he stopped going and became inactive.Johnny married Thelma in 1940 and they had 3 children. He owned and operated Brown's Feed Store for 36 years and 6 months, when he retired. He enjoyed fishing, storytelling(he was one of the best in Mansfield about the town's history), and his grandchildren, whom he adored.John was a retired Mansfield Fire Chief and he served with the likes of Joe Martin, Monk Cherry, Barney Byers, Mr. Basham, and Mr. Holestein. Johnny cared for his town andthe people in it. But the people loved him, as was evident at his funeral, when the Mansfield 1st United Methodist Church was packed. Outside stood present day firemen and he was escorted by the firemen in their new fire truck.
