EDWARD G. BASTABLE
(1915 - 2005)

Edward G. Bastable, age 90, a Manitowoc resident, died Saturday morning, Dec. 17, 2005 at Holy Family Memorial Medical Center, Manitowoc, surrounded by his loving family.

Born Feb. 20, 1915 in Boston, Mass., Edward and his siblings are the family's first generation Irish on American soil. He led an active life filled with various adventures and accomplishments As a young man, the West beckoned, so he left Massachusetts at the age of 20. He soon met his bride Jeanette in Wisconsin and they married on Nov. 27, 68 years ago making their home in Milwaukee and later in Manitowoc. Edward worked at Allis-Chalmers and Manitowoc Shipbuilding Co. as a crane operator working overhead and gantry cranes including the manufacturing of WWII submarines. In 1945 he entered active service in the Army and was deployed to Germany. He received the Good Conduct medal, American Defense Campaign medal, WWII Victory medal, Honorable Service Lapel Button, Army of Occupation - Germany medal, and classification as Rifle Expert. He was honorably discharged after serving as Sergeant, Technician Fourth Grade.

Edward also served in the Manitowoc County National Guard Association, the Army Corp of Engineers, and the Wisconsin State Guard Company E Infantry. Edward was an avid sportsman, gun enthusiast, and outdoorsman. He has been on numerous hunting and fishing trips with friends and family. For many years Edward and his wife held an annual gathering for opening day of pheasant season where many people enjoyed good hunting and wonderful meals at their home.

He believed in "memory making" and strived to provide his family with wonderful, fondly recalled experiences. Many times this consisted of driving excursions to most of the lower 48 states along with Canada and Mexico.

He was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Manitowoc Rifle and Pistol Club, Viking Bow and Gun Club, Rockea Hunting Club, National Rifle Association, Wisconsin Bow Hunters, American Legion, Isaac Walton League, and was a volunteer Manitowoc County Deputy Sheriff. Edward was an award-winning amateur photographer and a skilled children's story-teller complete with illustrations.

Edward is survived by his loving wife, Jeanette (Herman), daughter Adrienne (Marvin) Ludwig, Manitowoc; son Chad (Linda) Bastable, Wausau: daughter Debi (David) Plekan, Hulett, Wyo.: daughter Tami (Kent) Aubry, Chilton; brother Jim Bastable, Middleton, Mass.; 10 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.

Edward's family thanks Dr. Govier for all her medical expertise and bedside manner, Dr. Giriyappa, and the entire HFMMC 3 East nursing and support staff for their excellent care and empathy.

The family invites you to join in a Celebration of Life for Edward on Wednesday, Dec. 21, 2005 at Jens Family Funeral Home, 1122 S. Eighth St., Manitowoc, from 5 to 7 p.m.. memorial service at 7 p.m.. refreshments to follow.
