George P. Adams Jr., 85, of Indianapolis, died Saturday, Jan. 21, 2006.
Born June 7, 1920, in Rushville, he was the son of George (and Mary) P. Adams Sr., both deceased. He married Maxine Lucille Shane Sept. 12, 1947; she preceded him in death.
Mr. Adams was a 1938 graduate of Rushville High School and a 1942 graduate of Indiana University, Bloomington, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree. He served in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1945, achieving the rank of 1st Sergeant. While serving in Europe he received four battle stars. He then attended the University of Michigan's School of Social Work from 1947 to 1949, earning a M.S.W. His professional career began with the U.S. District Court, Eastern District of Michigan, where he remained until he retired as Chief U.S. Probation Officer. He was the first African-American Chief of U.S. Probation in the United States. He and his wife attended Plymouth United Church of Christ in Detroit from 1950 to 1987, at which time they returned to Indianapolis where he served in various church leadership positions for many years. He was an active member of Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity, which he joined in 1939 while at I.U. While in Detroit he served as president of his neighborhood improvement association for several years. He was also a volunteer for the Alzheimer's Association of Central Indiana for a number of years.
Survivors include one daughter, Sandra (Mrs. Julian) Emmanuel; one sister, Marjorie A. Hackett; and one grandson.
Besides his parents and wife he was preceded in death by one sister, Lois Adams, and one brother, Harold T. Adams.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Faith United Christian Church, 4550 N. Illinois St., Indianapolis. Visitation will be from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the church.
Memorial contributions may be made to the United Way of Central Indiana Forever Fund or the scholarship fund of the Neal-Marshall Section of the Indiana University Alumni Fund.
