Joseph George Nohra, 92, of Spartanburg, died Saturday, June 2, 2007, at his home.

Born January 21, 1915, in Troy, NY, he was the son of the late George and Dora (Frangirsh) Nohra and the husband of Joan Idell (Cox) Nohra.

A retired store manager with Butte Knit and a member of St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, Mr. Nohra was a founding member of the Syrian Young Men's Association (SYMA) in Brooklyn, NY, where he was reared and a charter member of the VFW. He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army stationed at Camp Croft.

Joe's hobbies included yard work and tending to his home, both of which he was very proud. He loved reading and watching NASCAR and tennis. He enjoyed traveling, riding to the mountains, and visiting with his friends in Charleston. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren were his pride and joy.

Joe possessed the lost art of storytelling and would intrigue and fascinate those around him for hours, and was always the life of the party. Those who met him once never forgot him. He was a generous man who always made sure that the comfort and needs of others came before his own.

He was truly a remarkable gentleman who always extracted the most out of life. He was a blessing and inspiration to all, and will be missed dearly.

Surviving in addition to his wife of 42 years are two daughters, Joie Nohra Kountz and her husband Ronald David Kountz of Spartanburg, and Carolina Rarick and her husband Bob of Hayden, ID; a brother, Edmund Nohra of Brooklyn, NY; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by a sister, Lillian Mastanduno.

Private cryptside services were held Monday, June 4, 2007, at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens Heritage Chapel Mausoleum.

Memorial services were held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 10, 2007, at Second Presbyterian Church, 438 North Church Street, Spartanburg.
