He enlisted at New York City on 19 Apr 1861, was commissioned into the Field and Staff of the 5th Regiment, also known as the Jefferson Guard on 01 July 1861, and mustered out on 07 Aug 1861. He died of typhus fever at the family home in Brunswick, Germany.
