Spending time with family watching sports & reading was what made John happy. He loved communicating with people through the air waves & started people off with a smile on their face every morning. He spent his life always willing to serve others. His kindness, huge smile & big heart will be missed by all who knew him but mostly by his wife, son, & grandsons. He is survived by his wife Herlinda, son Erik, grandson Rafael & Pablo of Reno, Nevada. He is also survived by his siblings Carl and sister-in-law Elaine Schultz from Windfield, KS. He is preceded in death by his parents John Schultz and Ann Perks and by brother Stephen Schultz. A viewing was held at Heavenly Grace in La Feria Texas on Sunday, the 13th of November, 2016. Mass was held the following day, Monday, the 14th of November at St Joan of Arc Church, 109 South Illinois St. Weslaco, TX 78596 at 2 pm.

I've been trying to get in touch with Sonny for a few years, so it came as a shock to learn of his passing. I had the pleasure of working with Sonny at both versions of K-TEX, in 1982 in Mercedes and in Brownsville, Texas. I wondered what a former KHJ jock was doing working at a station the size of a broom closet but I soon realized what the clever owners had in mind. Sonny singlehandedly put KTXI on the map in the Rio Grande Valley, turning the station from a little mom and pop operation, to one that attracted lucrative advertising and generated considerable income. His effort allowed the station owners to sell and become wealthy. They took Sonny with them to their new radio station in Brownsville where Sonny worked tirelessly once again building that facility into one that was eventually sold at a great profit. I have to say that there are only a few people that I've encountered in 40 years of radio that are both great talents and also decent human beings, that was Sonny, always happy, with the ability to make radio sound like it should, bright, tight, brief and real and fun! He had a real passion for radio (except for getting up at 4 am). My son was born in San Benito in 1986, we have good memories of the area and met some very nice people. Sonny and Linda were certainly in that group. Years after we left the Valley, I was dismissed from my job in Dallas. I called Sonny and he told me to come on down, that there would be something for me. There are some people you never forget, that was Sonny. My deepest condolences to Sonny's children, grandchildren and to Linda and her family. I'm sorry I didn't get a chance to see him one more time.
