Enlisted on 2/1/1863 at Amherst Court House, VA., he was mustered into Company H, 19th Virginia Infantry as a Private.
Present or accounted for on all Rolls until POW 4/6/1865 in Amelia County, VA.; confined 4/9/1865 City Point, VA.; confined 4/14/1865 Point Lookout, MD; Oath of Allegiance 6/13/1865 and released from there.

The 51st Virginia Infantry Regiment was formed in August, 1861, with eleven companies. Company L was later assigned to the 23rd Battalion. Its members were recruited in the counties of Wythe, Nelson, Bland, Floyd, and Grayson.
