Clarence Roberts was affectionately known by all as "Ted." He was a twin, but his little sister died at birth, they having been born in Myrtle, California. He had twin sisters, Luella and Leola, who were born 8 Nov. 1890. Both lived into the 1970s and were buried at Oakdale Cemetery. Ted's father had an orange grove right next to the Perry Bashore orange grove on Double Avenue in Covina. Perry's son, Lee Bashore, married Hazel's sister, Myrtle. Ted and Hazel Ayers dated while going to Covina High School. They would go to ball games and shows at the school. After high school, Ted went to southwestern Oregon to work on a dairy ranch. He saved up money and sent for Hazel to get married in 1917 in Myrtle Point, Oregon. They bought some land from Hazel's mother in Covina where Ted ran a small dairy farm. After the war, Ted took charge of a shipment of relief supplies to Italy in a project sponsored by the Brethren Church. They later moved to Carlsbad where Ted spent the remainder of his life. He worked as a school custodian and was a boy scout leader. He enjoyed carving wood birds and bible figures. Although he and Hazel never had children of their own, he was "Uncle Ted" to both nieces, nephews, and other children who made his acquaintance. He loved growing fruits and vegetables and raising rabbits and chickens at their place in Carlsbad.
