Henry F. La Bau was the son of Jonathan and Margaret (Bergasse) La Bau. His paternal ancestors were Huguenots who left France during the reign of Louis XIV and settled in New Jersey. His maternal grandfather was born on the island of Scio, of Greek parents, and came to this country while young, settling in Philadelphia. A brother, N. B. La Bau, married Mary A. Vanderbilt, a daughter of Commodore Vanderbilt, and at one time was a member of the New York Legislature.

Henry La Bau came to California in 1849 as a First Officer on the barque "Clyde." He left New York with sufficient stock and material to start a general merchandise store, and ran a business in Sacramento for several years as a member of the firm of H. F. La Bau & Co. He moved to San Francisco after suffering great losses by fire and flood. He was a member of the Vigilance Committee in San Francisco and was actively identified with the Fire Department.

Henry La Bau and Susan Ortley were married in 1856, and took up residence in Alviso, where Mr. La Bau was employed as a bookkeeper and cashier. They had a son, Albert, who died at age 3, and a daughter, Margaret, who married Thornton J. Corwin.
