Accident on I-65 kills off-duty IPD sergeant

Sgt Jack S Greene, a 13-year member of the Indianapolis Police Department, was killed when a car in which he was riding struck the rear of a disabled semitrailer on an interstate about noon Tuesday, police said. Greene, 35, was off duty and a passenger in a 1985 Toyota Corolla driven by his wife, Beverly K Greene, 33.

“He had a very tragic bout with cancer and evidently just gotten it whipped,” said Chief Deputy James E Campbell, head of the city police operations division.

“Jack worked for me as a brand-new officer,” said had Maj Robert L Snow. “He was a real go-getter, a real hard worker, one of the people who really wanted to get out and bust it while he was working.”

Services set Friday for Jack S Greene, 13-year IPD Veteran

Indianapolis Police Department Sgt. Jack S Greene, 35, Indianapolis, died Tuesday of injuries suffered in an automobile accident on I-65 near the Keystone Avenue exit Tuesday.

Services will be AT 1:00 PM Friday in Sterling-Gerber Funeral Home, Thompson Road Chapel, with calling hours form 2 pm to 9 pm today.

A 13-year IPD veteran, he had been promoted to sergeant in November 1982. He was wounded while working off-duty as a security guard and later was slightly injured during an accident involving a man barricaded inside a home in 1982.

Sgt Greene had been on light duty status since August and had just returned to full duties earlier this week after a lengthy battle with cancer.

He is a member of Ninth Street Christian Church, Logansport.

He was a graduate of Indiana University.
